Frequently Asked Questions
What is PPF (Paint Protection Film)?
PPF is a clear, durable thermoplastic urethane film applied to your vehicle’s painted surfaces. It acts as an invisible shield against rock chips, scratches, bug splatter, bird droppings, tree sap, and UV damage. The best part? It’s self-healing, so minor scratches disappear with heat from the sun or warm water.
Unlike ceramic coating which provides a protective nano-layer, PPF is a thick physical barrier that actually absorbs impacts before they reach your paint.
What vehicles do you install PPF on?
We install paint protection film on all makes and models. From everyday commuters to high-end exotics. Our team regularly handles PPF installation on Tesla (Model 3, Model Y, Model S, Model X, and Cybertruck), BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, Audi, Lexus, Corvette, Ford, Toyota, Honda, Jeep, RAM, Rivian, and more. Tesla PPF installation is one of our most requested services. The single-stage paint Tesla uses is thinner and softer than most manufacturers, which makes it especially vulnerable to rock chips, scratches, and swirl marks.
Whether you’re protecting a brand-new Tesla or preserving the finish on a classic Porsche, we precision-cut and hand-apply every panel for seamless coverage.
How long does a PPF installation take?
Installation time depends on your coverage package. A front-end package (hood, bumper, fenders, mirrors) typically takes 1-2 days to ensure proper surface preparation, precise application, and adequate curing time. Full-body coverage can take 3-5+ days—we never rush installations because quality takes time.
Every panel must be meticulously prepped, every edge must be sealed, and every square inch must be inspected before we’re satisfied with the results.
What's the difference between PPF and ceramic coating?
PPF is a physical barrier—an 8-mil thick film that absorbs impacts and prevents rock chips from reaching your paint. Ceramic coating is a liquid-applied nano-layer that provides hydrophobic properties, enhanced gloss, UV protection, and easier cleaning, but won’t stop a rock chip or deep scratch.
Many of our customers combine both for the ultimate protection: PPF for impact defense on high-risk areas, ceramic coating over the PPF and remaining surfaces for shine, water-beading properties, and simplified maintenance. Think of PPF as armor and ceramic coating as a protective shield that also enhances appearance.
How long will PPF last?
With proper care, quality PPF lasts 7-10+ years under normal driving conditions. Our installations come with a manufacturer’s lifetime warranty against yellowing, cracking, peeling, and delamination. We typically recommend reassessing coverage around the 7-10 year mark depending on exposure and driving conditions—vehicles garaged and hand-washed regularly can see PPF last well over a decade, while daily drivers exposed to harsh elements may need replacement sooner.
The film continues protecting your paint even as it ages, and when it’s eventually removed, your paint underneath remains factory-fresh.
How do I care for my vehicle after PPF installation?
Wait 48-72 hours before washing to allow full curing of the adhesive. After that, hand washing or touchless car washes are ideal—avoid high-pressure sprayers aimed directly at film edges, as they can cause lifting over time. The film’s self-healing properties are activated by heat, so parking in the sun or using warm water during washing helps maintain that like-new appearance.
We provide detailed care instructions when you pick up your vehicle, and our team is always available to answer maintenance questions. Many clients also pair PPF with ceramic coating applied over the film, which makes washing even easier and adds incredible hydrophobic properties.
Can PPF be applied over existing paint damage or scratches?
PPF is a clear film, which means it doesn’t hide existing imperfections—it actually magnifies them under certain lighting conditions. If your vehicle has existing scratches, swirl marks, or paint defects, we recommend addressing those with paint correction before PPF installation.
We can assess your paint during the initial inspection and recommend whether correction is needed. Applying PPF over pristine paint ensures you lock in that perfect finish for years to come.
Do you offer PPF at your La Mesa location?
Yes! All PPF installations are performed in-house at our La Mesa shop located at 7147 University Avenue. We serve customers from all over San Diego County—including San Diego, Chula Vista, Alpine, El Cajon, Santee, Lakeside, National City, Spring Valley, and beyond. Our climate-controlled facility ensures optimal installation conditions year-round, and our four decades of experience mean your vehicle receives the meticulous care it deserves.
We also offer window tinting, windshield protection, and ceramic coating services at the same location for complete vehicle protection.
How much does PPF cost in San Diego?
Pricing varies based on vehicle size, paint condition, and coverage area. Front-end packages typically start around $1,500-$2,500, providing excellent protection for daily drivers who want to shield high-impact zones without full-body pricing. Full-body coverage ranges from $5,000-$8,000+ depending on the vehicle’s size and complexity—exotic vehicles with aggressive body lines require more time and material.
Contact us for a custom quote tailored to your specific make, model, and protection goals. We’ll discuss your driving habits, protection priorities, and budget to recommend the ideal coverage package.
Will PPF stop all rock chips and scratches?
PPF provides exceptional protection against the vast majority of road hazards, but it’s not indestructible. A large rock traveling at highway speeds can still penetrate the film—though it’s far more likely to damage the film rather than the paint beneath it. The beauty of PPF is that the film is the sacrificial layer: it takes the damage so your paint doesn’t.
If the film sustains significant damage, we can remove and replace the affected panel without any damage to your original paint. For minor scratches and swirl marks, the film’s self-healing technology handles those automatically through heat activation.
Can PPF be removed if I sell my vehicle or want to change coverage?
Yes, professional-grade PPF can be cleanly removed by experienced installers without damaging the paint underneath—in fact, when removed, your paint will be in the exact same condition as when the film was installed, often looking better than the rest of the vehicle’s unprotected areas. This is a huge selling point when it’s time to trade in or sell your vehicle; buyers love seeing that the paint has been protected and maintained.
Removal should always be performed by professionals, as improper removal techniques can cause paint damage or leave adhesive residue.
Does PPF interfere with sensors, cameras, or radar systems?
Quality PPF is engineered to be optically clear and will not interfere with modern vehicle safety systems like adaptive cruise control radar, lane-keeping cameras, parking sensors, or collision avoidance systems. We take special care when applying film around sensor locations to ensure proper function.
If your vehicle has complex driver assistance technology, let us know during the consultation—we’ll explain exactly how we protect those areas without compromising system performance.
What about matte or satin PPF finishes?
While we primarily install gloss PPF that maintains your vehicle’s factory finish, we can source and install matte or satin finish PPF for customers who want to change their vehicle’s appearance while adding protection. Matte PPF gives a sophisticated, non-reflective finish that’s popular on luxury and exotic vehicles.
Keep in mind that matte finishes require special care products and maintenance techniques—we’ll provide complete guidance on maintaining these unique finishes.
